On the occasion of World Cities Day, UN Secretary-General ” António Guterres delivered a compelling message underscoring the pivotal role of cities in driving sustainable development. Beyond being economic powerhouses, cities are now at the forefront of addressing some of the most pressing global challenges, from the ever-pressing climate crisis to the widening social disparities and political rifts that afflict our world.

A startling statistic emphasizes the urban shift that our planet is experiencing over 50% of the world’s population has already embraced urban living. Projections by UN-Habitat indicate that this trend will persist, with almost 70% of the world’s population expected to reside in cities by 2050.

While cities undeniably contribute significantly to the global GDP and offer fertile ground for innovation, they also run the risk of becoming breeding grounds for inequality. Challenges such as overcrowding, pollution, inadequate infrastructure, and social injustices persist in urban landscapes. Shockingly, approximately 1.1 billion people currently call slums and informal settlements within urban areas their homes, perpetuating the cycle of poverty and limited opportunities.

Secretary – General Guterres voiced his apprehension about the formidable challenges confronting local authorities, struggling to meet the ever-increasing demand for critical infrastructure, affordable housing, efficient transportation, and essential social services while operating with limited support and resources.

This year’s World Cities Day, with its theme Financing Sustainable Urban Development, sends out a clarion call for collective action. It urges governments, international organizations, the private sector, and civil society to join forces and mobilize financial resources to construct cities that are both resilient and sustainable. Guterres emphatically advocates for equitable global financing solutions, emphasizing the significance of innovative and diversified funding sources that can foster urban environments marked by climate-friendly, inclusive, and equitable characteristics.

In a bid to enhance coordination and ensure that the voices of cities and regions are effectively represented, the Secretary-General recently founded the Advisory Group on Local and Regional Governments. This group is committed to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and ensuring that urban areas are heard as the world prepares for the Summit of the Future next year.

World Cities Day 2023 found a fitting venue in the Municipality of Uskudar in Istanbul, Türkiye, under the theme Financing a Sustainable Urban Future for All. The event brought together over 1,000 participants from 221 countries, demonstrating a collective commitment to embracing the unstoppable global urbanization trend. It emphasizes the importance of adapting our cities to unlock their potential as hubs of resources and talent, presenting a compelling opportunity to scale up solutions that truly leave no one and no place behind.
